Better by Atul Gawande
I just finished reading this book. Initially it was kind of tough to figure out the title, but now it makes sense: it refers to the process of self-improvement by the physician. And it actually talks about all of that without really preaching. A very well written collection, which at the outset appear to be random topics selected for obscure reasons. But towards the end; you see the thread which is weaving through the book. Each is headed towards the common goal of refining skills and attitudes. Dr. Gawande is very talented and humble person. Trained and working at one of the premier hospitals in this country, and then a surgeon on top of everything, makes for a very remarkable experience with exceptional fluidity. He is a breed apart from the usual obnoxious and arrogant surgeons we are so used to interacting with. I just hope this is the changing face of the profession of surgery.
